Abstract The modified hydroxyl acrylic dispersion was synthesized by using glycidyl tert-carbonate and acrylate monomer as raw materials to change the molar ratio of E10P:AA in four-step method. In first step, a polyester alcohol prepolymer was synthesized by using glycidyl carbonate (E10P) and acrylic acid as raw materials which was measured the acid value. In second step, the mixture of 80% acrylate monomers and initiator were dripped in 4–5 h. In third step, within 1.5 h, the remaining 20% acrylate monomer and initiator mixture were dripped. In the last step, the dispersions were neutralised using triethanolamine. At this stage, the water-borne hydroxyacrylic acid dispersion was obtained by adding the calculated amount of water and stirring for 2 h. In addition, some characterizations of the prepared hydroxy acrylic dispersions were also performed. The modified hydroxyl acrylic dispersion water-borne varnish has high fullness, good gloss, high hardness, good adhesion, good impact resistance, good water resistance and acetone resistance.
