Abstract The centrifuge method is one tool for the measurement of particle adhesion forces. The method is well established for single particles with a detachment in normal direction to the substrate. In order to consider a detachment in radial direction and particle-particle interactions, an optical centrifuge was designed and built. The arrangement of the optical components in the centrifuge corresponds to a microscope configuration. The use of a mechanical image derotation device allows the application of a non-rotating camera. Thus, it is possible to continuously and online observe an enlarged image of the sample during the centrifugation.
