Abstract The advancement of communication technologies and the change of the global economic landscape has paved the way for connected, smart manufacturing industries. Cyber-physical systems sit at the core of the development endeavor of the modern manufacturing industries. However, a cyber-physical system integrated weldability certification is still an unmet need. This paper presents a conceptual cyber-physical system framework for Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) weldability certification that integrates the physical welding machine and sensor data with analytics and prediction modules. We develop a system level design of the CPS framework and determine the requirements for developing a CPS for RSW. In this framework, machine learning algorithms and modern distributed computation frameworks are used to predict RSW weld quality.
