Abstract In order to verify that the three-roll skew rolling process can reduce the diameter of equal-diameter hollow shafts, first, the working principle of the three-roll skew rolling of the equal-diameter hollow shaft is explained; then the billet and rolling process parameters are selected according to the actual three-roll skew rolling mill performance; next a finite element model of three-roll skew rolling to reduce the diameter of the equal-diameter hollow shaft is established, and simulation and experiment are performed; finally, a comparative analysis is performed on the simulated and experimental rolled pieces. The results show that shafts have spiral mark defects, and the errors between experiment and theoretical dimensions of the rolled products is less than 2% in diameter direction and 10% in the length direction respectively. These defects and errors can be controlled by optimizing the process parameters. Further research on the three-roll skew rolling of equal-diameter hollow shaft technology can provide a theoretical basis for the three-roll skew rolling of high-speed train hollow axle technology.
