Abstract The gas gain in the range of 1.0–2 × 105 was measured for propane-based tissue equivalent gas mixtures in the pressure range of 9–500 hPa. The Zastawny and Mitev et al. models of avalanche growth were used to analyse the obtained data. Both models showed that for low pressures of the working mixture, (i.e., below 80 hPa), there were non–equilibrium states of the development of the electron avalanche. The minimum size of the simulated biological target was determined on the basis of the measurements.
