Abstract The matrix effects have been corrected by using the ratio of the Rayleigh to Compton scattering intensities in WDXRF system. In this work, Fe is chosen as analyte. The binary mixtures of Fe with other materials (Ca, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) are prepared. In these mixtures, Fe ratios are changed ranging from 10% to 90%. Spectra of the samples have been obtained by scintillation detector in WDXRF system. The relationships between the ratios of the Rayleigh to Compton scattering intensities versus Fe concentrations were determined experimentally. It was observed that the ratio of the Rayleigh to Compton scattering intensities can be used to correct the matrix effects.
