Abstract The total mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels have been investigated by using Geant4 simulation toolkit at energies ranging from 0.01 MeV to 100 GeV. Moreover, Geant4 is applied to further study on the partial mass attenuation coefficient of three main interactions including photoelectric effect, compton scattering, gamma conversion between incident photon and ODS steels. Then molecular cross-section (σm) and mean free path (λ) are obtained by the total mass attenuation coefficients. The results obtained by Geant4 are compared with those obtained by experiments and XCOM program and these results agree with each other very well. It is concluded that Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit is a powerful tool in studying interaction of photons in material and energies. The shielding parameters of ODS steels presented in this paper can be very useful for the potential nuclear application and other industries in future.
