Abstract This work presents the characterization of the pigments present in four paintings by Vincent van Gogh, one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of western art. The studied paintings are “The Schoolboy”, “The Stone Bench in the Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital”, “Landscape with Couple Walking and Crescent Moon” and “The Arlesienne”, from the collection of the Sao Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). In situ XRF measurements were carried out by means of a portable system. XRF provided substantial information about the materials present in the paintings. The results shown in this work are in total agreement with those obtained by others works on paintings by Vincent van Gogh during his time in Arles and Saint-Remy.
