Abstract Avulsion risk can bring not only hydro-geomorphic change but also crop failure, damages of infrastructure. The present work intends to identify the susceptible avulsion zone in Lower part of river Mayurakshi river based on multi-criteria approach. Non weighted and weighted composite avulsion potential models are prepared using eight parameters. Cross valley slope is emerged as a dominant factor (weight: 0.328). Based on the result 7.98km stream segment of Mayurakshi River is appeared as very highly susceptible to avulsion. Most of the avulsion incidents are local in character which does not carry any significant role for inviting hydro-geomorphological changes but two regional avulsions as found in the study area have brought enormous change in drainage setup of the study area. Attenuation of discharge, stream power, squeezing of channel configuration in the avulsion downstream segment is the evident consequences in avulsion downstream segment of river Mayurakshi River.
