Abstract The new species Geissorhiza mellimontana (Iridaceae: Crocoideae) is a narrow endemic of Western Cape, South Africa. Evidently allied to the relatively widespread G. scillaris A.Dietr. of subg. Geissorhiza sect. Intermedieae, it is a more robust species bearing significantly larger flowers with relatively narrower tepals but proportionally longer stamens and style, and purple anthers. Discovered in July 2020, it is restricted to the Heuningberg, an isolated ridge of sandstone in an area of shale-derived soils that lies between the Piketberg range to the northwest and the Groot Winterhoek Mtns to the east. A revised key to the species in sect. Intermedieae is presented.
