Abstract Currently, heat consumption patterns in the Yangtze River Region was a hot topic for discussion in China. Air conditioning (AC) with heating and cooling functions was the major method for residential heating in this region. It was believed that great energy saving potential could be achieved by enhancing user behavior for this type of heating method. This study analyzed the energy saving potential attributed to occupant behavior in the heating of hotel buildings in the Yangtze River region by examining the relevant monitoring data collected from several hotels in different cities in the Yangtze River region. The results of the analysis showed that there was still a high energy saving potential considering the status of energy use in the Yangtze River region, which could be achieved through adjusting user behavior towards AC. Therefore, the energy consumption for heating in the Yangtze River region could be further reduced through appropriate user behavior.
