Abstract Deep open cut mining with trucks is inefficient as energy is consumed in lifting the truck as well as the load from a mine. Here we outline a method of eliminating trucks by using an electric winch supported by a balloon for lifting loads. Comparative analysis indicates that by adopting the proposed method fuel and infrastructure costs and cycle times can be substantially reduced.
