Abstract We present seismic hazard maps for Macedonia and show how the Uniform Hazard Spectra (UHS) method eliminates the difficulties associated with the use of the fixed- shape design spectra. The UHS method also eliminates the issues that result from scaling in terms of peak accelerations—when it is necessary to include hazard contributions from large distant earthquakes—as well as the problem of the inability of the fixed-shape spectra to describe frequency-dependent spectral shapes for different probabilities of exceedance. We also show how far south contributions of the Vrancea earthquakes reach as seen in the UHS of strong ground motion in Macedonia.
