Abstract The seismic response of a foundation with a viscous-spring artificial boundary induced by obliquely spatial incident shear (S) waves is investigated in this paper. The results obtained indicate that the torsional and rocking response of the foundation can be generated by obliquely spatial incident S waves. The magnitude of the torsional and rocking response of the foundation changes with a variation in the angle of the input S waves. Subsequently, a frame structure supported on a surface foundation is established to analyse the impact of the incident angles of seismic waves on the torsional and rocking response of the superstructure. Notably, the angle of incidence of the seismic waves has a significant effect on the amplitude of the torsional and rocking response of the superstructure. Thus, it is necessary to consider the angles of the incident seismic waves during the hazard assessment of the structures.
