Abstract Under investigation in this paper is the Hirota equation, which describes pulse propagation in optical fibers with higher-order effects. Three different types of soliton interactions are investigated in detail, the formulas for the corresponding approximate eigenvalues and interaction periods are presented. In addition, the methods for restraining the mutual interactions between neighboring bound solitons are concluded.
