Abstract The surface investigation of FePO4 obtained by delithiation of lithium in various periods of time is presented. XRD with Rietveld analysis revealed one-phased samples with cell parameters consistent with literature. SEM/EDS and TEM accompanied with SAED analysis of the obtained powders showed the surface contaminations of potassium and sulphur compounds and amorphous areas, which can affect on the electrochemical performance of the Na/Na+/FePO4 cells. For the enhancement of the constructed cells properties, the water rinsing of the samples was used. This simple method of eliminating surface contaminations allowed to obtain the discharge capacities up to 70 mAh/g and 40 mAh/g at C/10 current rate for FePO4(24h) and FePO4(16h), respectively.
