Abstract Two Cu-9Ni-6Sn coatings with and without Sn-rich precipitates were obtained by laser-cladding. For two cross-section of coatings, the corrosion resistance can be graded in the order as equiaxed dendrite zone > dendrite zone > planar zone > Fe substrate due to the difference in composition and microstructure of the four zones. The coating with Sn-rich precipitates suffered severe localized corrosion, whereas general corrosion morphology was presented for the coating without Sn-rich precipitates. Clearly, a single-phase coating with large equiaxed dendrite zone should be developed by optimizing laser parameters for prolong the service life.
