Abstract This research attempt to improve the anti-scratch properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) blend polyurethane sheets (PMMA/PU sheet) by gap coating. The factors that are affected in the coated PMMA/PU are also studied, such as the varying content of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Moreover, methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an adhesive between the sheets and coating agent. The scratch resistance properties, morphology and transparency of the coated PMMA/PU sheets are determined. The results indicate that scratch resistance is decreased damage due to adding TEOS. After the scratch test display a fish-scale deformation zone. This phenomenon is related to ductile polymers. The coated PMMA/PU sheet has excellent hardness properties because the scratch resistance of the coated PMMA/PU sheet is higher than uncoated PMMA/PU sheet. The Izod and Charpy-type impact strength of the coated PMMA/PU sheet both increased relative to that of the non-coated sheets. The PMMA/PU sheet could improve by the gap coating technique, which enhance the PMMA/PU sheet scratch resistance levels. Therefore, the coated PMMA/PU sheet is applied to industrial applications.
