Abstract A new multi-mechanism kinetic model for batch adsorption is proposed. A dimensionless parameter in the model serves as a mechanism indicator in the sense that the model converts to the pseudo-first-order (PFO), the Vermeulen (intraparticle diffusion) and the film diffusion models as the dimensionless parameter changes its values. Expressions relating the model parameters and the mass transfer coefficients are obtained which allow for the estimation of the film mass transfer and the intraparticle diffusion coefficients from `show that the estimated mass transfer coefficients are in reasonable agreement with literature values.
