Abstract This paper analyses the fourth industrial revolution by shifting towards a more complexity-aware economics. In so doing we concentrate on the complexity of interactions in the development of Industry 4.0 and the Digital Economy by shedding light on the major set of dark corners (unintended consequences) that are calling for cultivating governance in favour of structural change. We therefore formulate the basic principles of a new economic governance in contributing to the sustainable development of the current industrial revolution and the Digital Economy.
