Abstract Nurse educators strive to facilitate educational growth in associate degree nurses as the Institute of Medicine recommends that nurses achieve higher levels of education to ensure the delivery of safe, patient-centered care. This study examines what variables are supportive, or restrictive, of the retention of registered nurse-bachelor of science students in their programs. Analysis of the data finds that encouragement by friends is most supportive, whereas childcare arrangements and family responsibilities are most restrictive.
