Abstract Hydrogen is widely considered an ideal energy source from the viewpoint of sustainability. However, as hydrogen is a gas under ambient conditions and needs to be handled with care, the development of safe and efficient hydrogen storage methods is indispensable for realizing advanced hydrogen technologies. For this reason, hydrogen storage systems that use organic compounds as a medium have garnered attention. In this review, catalytic systems for reversible dehydrogenation reactions and hydrogenation reactions using organic hydrogen carriers, those are promising to the application to hydrogen storage, are surveyed. Additionally, catalytic dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane and related compounds, those are also promising materials for hydrogen storage, are briefly introduced.
