Abstract Donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes show interesting reactivity and high selectivity in the cleavage of one of the cyclopropane bonds. This particular reactivity has been extensively explored in various transformations like cycloaddition, rearrangement and cascade reactions. This rich reactivity profile, particularly of oxygen/nitrogen substituted D-A cyclopropanes has led to their emergence as versatile building blocks in organic chemistry. This review summarises the applications of heteroatom substituted D-A cyclopropanes in the total synthesis of natural products.
