Abstract Polycyclic aromatic systems are important in synthetic chemistry, material science, and pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, extensive efforts have been made by the aromatic extension for the efficient access to diverse polycyclic aromatic systems. This review focuses on recent developments of palladium-catalyzed regioselective synthetic strategies with pre- and in situ-formed biaryl fragments, which enable the aromatic extension of readily available precursors into extended (hetero)aromatic systems in a rapid and facile manner.
