Abstract The tribological properties and wear mechanisms of Mo2FeB2 based cermets with Mn and Cr addition were evaluated from room temperature to 800 °C. The friction coefficients of all the Mo2FeB2 based cermets increased firstly and then dropped, and achieved the minimum values (0.4–0.5) at 800 °C. All the cermets showed outstanding wear resistances over wide temperature ranges under dry sliding. The worn surfaces implied that the wear mechanisms of the cermets changed from abrasive wear to mixed abrasive and oxidative wear, and finally to mild oxidative wear with increasing temperature. The mild wear transition behavior was explained by the formation of the tribo-oxide glaze layer and transfer film, which was related to the enrichment and oxidation of the binder phase.
