Abstract A model analysis is performed to understand the effect of dynamic friction on the compression and shear deformation of elastic spheres during oblique impacts with rigid targets. Friction induced shear vibrations of the spheres during impacts are analytically derived from the tangential velocities at the sphere center ( v b ) and contact center ( v c ) along the target. The experimental velocities of v b and v c determined for golf balls and steel targets were compared with the analytical shear vibrations to investigate the validity of the model. The dynamic friction force F d is given by λAv c based on a parameter ( λ ) associated with the surface conditions and the contact area ( A ) between the ball and target. The model described all of the important characteristics of the experimental shear vibrations during impact.
