Abstract Two prepared ionic liquids (ILs) from N-acyl amino acid and 2-mercatobenzothiazole derivate show anticorrosion properties in the water-glycerol mixture. Their combination yields improvement on the tribological properties. The statistical analyses revealed that the relationship between the mass ratio of both ILs and the friction coefficient follows a specific regression model. We deduced the optimal mass ratio and found that the optimal combination leads to the best friction-reducing and antiwear properties. By SEM-EDS and XPS analyses of the wear traces we further study the interaction of both ILs on the lubricity, and revealed that the lubrication mechanism of both ILs as the hybrid additives in water-glycerol mixture is ascribed to the coadsorbed layer and the hybrid tribofilm involving FeS and FeSO4.
