Abstract An experimental study on the effect of squeeze film clearance and oil inlet configuration on the displacement response of a Jeffcott rotor supported by squeeze film dampers (SFDs) is presented in this paper. Sealed and open-ended SFDs with three squeeze film clearances and three different oil inlet configurations are studied with different levels of unbalance applied to the system. Results show increased damping with smaller clearance and increased number of oil inlets, while the number and orientation of oil inlets also show an effect on the level of air ingestion into the SFD and some asymmetry in the rotor response.
