Abstract This study introduces the influence of terahertz laser field on optical absorption coefficients (OACs) and refractive index changes (RICs) related to the quantum wells with zigzag confinement potential. The energy levels and wave functions of the system are obtained by solving the Schrodinger equation within the framework of the effective-mass. The OACs and RICs are inferred from the scheme of compact density-matrix formalism. The results show that the peak of OACs and RICs are modulated by terahertz laser field and the potential parameter of quantum wells.
