Abstract The concept of a novel origami energy dissipation brace (OEDB) was proposed in this paper based on the folding pattern of Miura and Tachi unit cell. Creases introduced can induce OEDBs to deform in a predetermined manner Then, three low-carbon steel specimens were designed to examine how folding angle influences the brace hysteretic behavior. Experimental results showed that the failure of three specimens was caused all by the fracture of the central weld. The results also presented the variation tendency of the key mechanical characteristics of the specimens according to the changing origami folding angle, including hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, CPD, ductility, unbalance coefficient of tension and compression, equivalent viscous damping ratio, and strain distribution.
