Abstract With the help of melt-quenching technique, Using the devices of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can confirm BaGdF5 nanocrystals were formed among the precursor glass matrix. Analysis of DSC curve showed that glass ceramics (GC) can be gained by heat treatment. The excitation spectra of Sm3+ ions overlapped with the emission spectra of Tb3+ ions, which indicated it may be possible that the energy of Tb3+ to Sm3+ ions can be transferred via dipole-dipole interactions. Excited by the 375 nm light, a combination of blue (Tb3+: 5D3 →7F5,5D3→7F4), green (Tb3+: 5D4→7F6, 5D4→7F5) and red (Sm3+: 4G5/2→6HJ/2 J = 5,7,9) emission emerged to fulfill white emission in glass ceramics.
