Abstract Fretting wear behaviors of Inconel 600 and 690 plates against 304 stainless steel ball were investigated in pure water. The results indicated that Inconel 600 exhibited more excellent wear resistance than Inconel 690 as a fewer fatigue cracks were formed for its lower chromium. It could be explained as follows. Firstly, the material loss was mainly caused by fatigue cracks (delamination wear). Secondly, the fatigue cracks could be nucleated and propagated at the interface of Ni-rich zone/Cr-rich oxides zone in the tribological transformed structure, which was a special structure formed during fretting wear. Finally, the increasing chromium content would increase the area of Cr-rich oxides zone and eventually promote the formation of fatigue cracks.
