According to another recent study by Wilson et al., a high proportion of patients undergoing spinal surgeries will suffer new-onset depression; however, the etiology of this condition is not well understood. Postoperative depression negatively affects the results of spine surgery, with many patients seeking medical attention in pain, physical therapy, and spine surgery clinics and a large proportion requiring revision surgery with undetermined results to provide a better chance of pain relief.
