INTRODUCTION Treatment strategies for glioblastoma (GBM) of the corpus callosum remain limited to stereotactic biopsy in many cases due to the morbidity of aggressive surgical resection. METHODS We performed a study of 3 patients with histologically proven GBM of the corpus callosum who underwent bilateral LITT. Data collected included demographics, tumor location and volume, tumor genetic markers, treatment volume, perioperative complications, and Karnofsky Performance Scale(KPS) score pre and post-operatively. RESULTS We performed a total of 6 LITT treatments for 3 patients with GBM of the corpus callosum. Mean patient age was 64 yr, with an average tumor volume of 14.95 cm3. The mean pretreatment KPS score was 80, and there were no significant changes in KPS scores 1 month post-operatively. Mean extent of ablation (EOA) was 98.6% on postoperative MRI, and no patient suffered perioperative complications. At eight months follow-up, 2 of the 3 patients were alive and neurologically stable from their pre-operative state. The third patient elected to defer radiation and oncology treatment and was lost to follow-up. Progression free survival was a mean of 3.55 months, with interval satellite lesions seen on follow-up imaging. At 8 months follow-up, both patients were alive. CONCLUSION Although our case series is small, we demonstrate for the first time that bilateral LITT is a safe and effective treatment for glioblastoma of the corpus callosum. Given the known benefit of near gross total resection for high-grade gliomas, we believe LITT may improve survival for these patients whom otherwise would have undergone a biopsy.
