Abstract The scale factor, which the output of the fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) is proportional to, is sensitive to many factors in engineering. When the scale factor fluctuates during the measurement process, it will bring an error to the angle measurement results if the scale factor is not calibrated in time. A scale factor real-time calibration and angle measurement scheme based on self-collimator is proposed to eliminate the error caused by the fluctuation of the scale factor. The experimental results show that the error between the FOG and the rotary table is decreased to nearly 1″ after adopting the scheme at low angular velocities. Although the error is become larger when the angular velocity is increasing, the angle measurement results can still has a good stability.
