Abstract 3D printing is a disruptive technology that could revolutionise the fabrication of optical fibre by offering greater flexibility and diversity in material and structure designs. This paper reviews the recent research and development of material and fabrication techniques toward 3D printing-based polymer optical fibre (POF) and silica optical fibre (SOF).
