Abstract We propose a novel scheme of 8-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-8) signal generation by a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) driven by binary data with different driving voltages without digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The transmission over 1-km dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) employing 39.72-GBaud PAM-8 signal is successfully demonstrated in the bandwidth-limited system, satisfying the SD-FEC threshold of 2.7 × 10−2. A low-cost solution to PAM-8 signal generation is proposed, which shows superiority in low power consumption as well as simple system configuration.
