We characterize all spacelike and spherically symmetric constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in the maximally extended Reissner–Nordstrom spacetimes. These characterizations also provide a proof of the existence and uniqueness of the initial value problem for the spacelike and spherically symmetric constant mean curvature equation in the maximally extended Reissner–Nordstrom spacetimes.
