sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth century, and those with uncertain dates). Each entry provides a detailed set of information, including contextual data (the name of the author, the full title of the edition, the place of publication, the name of the printer, and the year of publication), physical elements (the format of the edition, the number of pages, the employed type, presence of images), content-related information (a succinct note about the edition’s content and history), references to bibliographical catalogues, and a list of libraries in which the edition is housed. Unfortunately, the catalogue does not note whether each edition has been digitized. The second volume opens with a list of bibliographical secondary sources and two alphabetical censuses of libraries referenced in the annals (one census is listed in accordance with the libraries’ acronyms employed in the catalogue, and one is organized on a country basis). Iurilli then includes ten indexes that help the user navigate his extensive catalogue. First, there are the indexes of secondary authors (i.e., exegetes, editors, imitators, musicians, parodists, and translators) and of printers and typographers. In each entry of both indexes, Iurilli includes not only references to the relative editions but also short biographical and bibliographical information about the person in question. Eight other indexes follow: (1) an index of printing places; (2) an index of imitations, paraphrases, parodies, and translations arranged according to author; (3) the same index arranged chronologically; (4) an index of translations arranged according to a language basis; (5) an index of musical editions per author; (6) the same index but arranged chronologically; (7) an index of all names of people and places mentioned in the work; and (8) an index of the thirty-nine illustrations that adorn Iurilli’s volumes. In sum, Iurilli’s Quinto Orazio Flacco is a remarkable piece of scholarly work that combines in-depth analysis of Horatian reception and print history with the first complete, carefully organized, and well-described census of Horatian editions (1465–1800).
