In the big picture of the Roman Empire the so-called ‘small towns’ of Roman Britain play only a very small part, but in the understanding of Roman Britain they figure quite large: they are surprisingly numerous, and arguably provide an important barometer for measuring the social and economic integration of local peoples in the province. Within this narrative there are only a comparatively small number of the hundred or so known sites that have been excavated on any scale. Since Godmanchester is amongst these, the appearance of this volume appears significant for those interested in Britannia, and indeed in the problem of how indigenous societies near the margins of the empire were incorporated.
