Lignocellulose materials are sustainable resources to produce various value-added organic acids and aldehydes. However, selective separation and effective recoveries of the lignocellulose-derived organic acids and aldehydes from their sugar precursors and byproducts remain challenges. This study demonstrated that cross-linked polyethylenimine (CPEI) as a reactive adsorbent could selectively adsorb the lignocellulose-derived organic acids and aldehydes without notably adsorbing sugars. The results also showed that the selective adsorption of aldehyde over organic acid could be further realized by adding inexpensive neutral salts. The adsorbed organic acids and aldehydes could be effectively separated and recovered, and the adsorbent could be easily regenerated for reuse.
