Patients: Hundred VLBW infants were allocated. Demographics were similar between groups; each group contained predominately African-American babies (90%) delivered between median of 27.5 and 28 weeks gestation primarily by C-section with median birth weight (BW) of 990 g. Greater than 85% of patients in each group received antenatal steroids. The timing of feeding initiation was at the discretion of the attending physician and occurred at a median of 3 days (interquartile range, 2–4 days).
