Here, wrinkled paper-like carbon (WPC) is fabricated using a facile method using a ZnCl2-modified NaCl-template method and subsequently annealed in Ar. Considering its use as a lithium ion battery (LIB) anode, the WPC electrode exhibits a large specific capacity of 1079 mA h g−1 at 0.35 A g−1 after 1000 cycles, a superior high-rate long-term cycling performance of 693 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 400 cycles and a good rate performance, which is superior to that of the sample before ZnCl2 modification. The outstanding electrochemical properties of the WPC can be mainly attributed to the large specific surface area (1658.6 m2 g−1), abundant pore volume, enhanced graphitization and the wrinkled architecture after ZnCl2 modification. However, this N-doped porous WPC has potential for use as a LIB electrode material.
