This study presents a power factor correction (PFC)-based switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive, as a best selection for low-voltage household applications. Here, a Cuk converter fed SRM drive is proposed for power quality improvement and complete motor control. The operation of Cuk converter is explained under three modes, with associated voltage and current waveforms during energy transfer between circuit components. The converter is designed to operate in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to obtain inherent PFC. However, DCM offers zero current switching on and no reverse recovery in a diode. The wide range of DC-link voltage is obtained with an improved power quality at supply side by controlled switching of the Cuk converter. The analysis of an inductor current waveform is presented to demonstrate inherent PFC technique in DCM. The power quality indices are measured on power quality analyser to demonstrate the test results. The obtained experimental results validate the stable drive performance under dynamic and steady state conditions.
