1 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 Dear Editors: I read with great interest the study by Choung et al conducted on a population living in Olmsted County, Minnesota. In this community, the prevalence of undiagnosed celiac disease was 1%. Furthermore, to compare the proportion of comorbidities between undiagnosed cases of celiac disease and ageand sex-matched seronegative subjects, a nested case control study was performed. Analyzing the difference of laboratory parameters the authors found lower ferritin levels (P1⁄4 .01) and cholesterol levels (P1⁄4 .03) in cases of undiagnosed celiac disease than in controls. It has been reported that 40% of individuals have elevated liver functions tests at celiac disease diagnosis and the majority normalize with standard diet.
