Abstract An 89-year-old man with peripheral vascular disease was admitted for aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting. Intraoperatively he was managed with an intraaortic balloon pump for circulatory support. Several hours postoperatively the balloon ruptured and became entrapped. Attempted removal of the balloon was complicated by retention of the tip. In this case report, we review balloon pump rupture and entrapment, discussing the recognition and management of this rare but life threatening complication.
