The hydrogen bonding motif of Dibenzo[a,c]phenazine carboxylic acid can be enforced to form hierarchical cyclic hydrogen bonded trimers for creating 3D Colh assembly at the mesophase, as demonstrated by XRD diffractions. Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to characterized the formation of the cyclic trimer. Atomic force microscopy revealed the formation of nanopillars on hydrophilized silica surface upon annealing from isotropic to room temperature.
