This paper proposes a predictive current control scheme for an improved topology of a distribution static compensator intended for dynamic reactive power compensation of grid connected squirrel cage induction generator based wind farms. The proposed strategy derives the converter switching pulses in each sampling period using a cost function that defines the desired system behavior. Predictive current control algorithm based reactive power compensation tracks the reference current effectively and maintains unity power factor at the point of common coupling under steady state and transient conditions. Further, under transient conditions the proposed scheme provides faster and smoother reactive power compensation compared to the hysteresis controller. In addition, this scheme does not require any modulation technique. Both simulation and experimentation have been carried out to verify and validate the performance of the proposed scheme, and the results are reported in this paper.
