Significance Information on urban built-up heights globally is needed to evaluate the effects of urban form and infrastructure on the environment, the economy, and human well-being. This study provides a global atlas of urban built-up heights and shows large spatial variations in built-up heights at continental, country, and city levels. The results reveal extreme gaps in urban built-up infrastructure availability in the Global South and large inequality in built-up infrastructure in most countries, but largest in the Global South compared with the Global North. The atlas has the potential to improve our understanding of the effects of urbanization on raw material demand, embodied and operational energy use, and urban development intensity.
