own institutions. like wickens, they are researching within their own professional community and often gathering data from fellow professionals with whom they have already interacted as professionals and with whom they must continue working after the research is over. Such researchers have a range of ethical and methodological challenges in conducting their research and in ensuring that they and colleagues can act upon research findings. wickens and crossley’s chapter will be invaluable to many other Edd students, but i find that much of the rest of the book is also valuable for my students in trying to work out the complexities of their positionality. issues of insider–outsider research may be longstanding but the book does make a valuable contribution to thinking about the complexities of this issue in the contemporary research world. the editors hope that the volume “offers a challenging, innovative and helpful contribution to the methodological literature within and beyond the field of comparative and international education” (p. 19). i am confident that they are right and recommend the book especially to doctoral students and their supervisors.
